Michigan Medicine is on the cusp of opening a new landmark adult hospital, the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion, that includes 264 private rooms capable of converting to intensive care, state-of-the-art operating rooms, advanced imaging, and high-level, specialty care services. The hospital is scheduled to open for patient care in November. Further clinical expansion is continuing with U-M Health’s new state-of-the-art specialty center in Oakland County, the Frances & Kenneth Eisenberg Troy Center for Specialty Care, slated to open in the spring 2027.

Position Overview

The Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) will lead Michigan Medicine’s Information Technology (IT) strategy and operations ensuring that the IT infrastructure, systems and capabilities enable the delivery of high-quality patient care, foster leading-edge biomedical and health sciences research and education, and drive operational excellence throughout the tripartite mission today and in the future. This role is critical in advancing the digital transformation initiatives and fostering organizational innovation. The CDIO will spearhead comprehensive digital strategies, leveraging current and emerging technologies to revolutionize patient care, clinical operations, research, education, and business processes. Technical expertise, administrative leadership, strategic foresight, exceptional communication and collaboration skills are essential to this role.

Michigan Medicine has launched an ambitious multi-year information technology plan with the initial focus on completing the integration of Michigan Medicine and the U-M Health Regional Network IT organizations. This will require harmonizing multiple organizations and varied systems, applications, and processes to function as a cohesive central corporate service. This integration will lay the groundwork for implementing a unified electronic health record (EHR) system across U-M Health. Another major initiative is migrating on-premises infrastructure to secure, scalable, cloud-based environments.   Addressing these challenges calls for strategic leadership to balance ongoing IT operations while progressively adopting and integrating new technologies for the Academic Medical Center, the U-M Health Regional Network, and the Medical School.

The CDIO will provide overall leadership and management for information technology and services across Michigan Medicine, including U-M Health and its Regional Network. As the senior executive IT leader for Michigan Medicine, the CDIO will create collaboration across Michigan Medicine’s IT services that span health care delivery and support operations; basic, translational, and clinical research; health services and outcomes research; and graduate, medical education, and training on a lifelong continuum. As an executive leader in Michigan Medicine, the CDIO will participate in and contribute to overall business strategy development, bringing current knowledge and a future vision of leveraging information and technology to provide a competitive advantage across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive IT strategy aligned with Michigan Medicine clinical, research, and educational goals.
  • Provide organizational leadership and direct supervision of system-wide IT operations, infrastructure, security, and enterprise applications in support of the tri-partite mission.
  • Plan, develop, and implement a cohesive, collaborative, secure, and cost-effective information technology strategic plan and actionable roadmap for Michigan Medicine. Ensure this portfolio of work is integrated with the enterprise’s strategic and financial planning processes and the resulting business strategies and plans.
  • Ensure the effective integration of IT structures, systems, and operations across the organization, including the academic enterprise.
  • In alignment with Michigan Medicine’s compliance and regulatory environment, lead IT governance and compliance efforts.
  • Manage relationships with technology vendors and partners.
  • Collaborate with clinical, academic, and administrative leaders to identify and implement technology solutions that improve operational efficiency in patient care, research, and education.
  • Serve as a member of the executive leadership team, contributing to overall organizational strategy.
  • Drive digital innovation and transformation initiatives.
  • Lead the identification, evaluation, and implementation of emerging technologies (e.g., Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet-of-Things (IoT), telemedicine) to drive innovation in healthcare delivery and biomedical and health science research and education.
  • Enhance and reimagine the patient and provider digital experiences, focusing on user-centric design.
  • Cultivate a culture of innovation and digital literacy throughout the clinical and academic organizations.
  • Develop and implement strategies for digital health initiatives, such as remote patient monitoring and virtual care.
  • Drive data-driven decision-making across the organization, including the development of advanced analytics and AI capabilities.
  • Serve as the organization’s digital champion, representing the company at industry events and fostering partnerships with other innovative healthcare organizations.

The CDIO reports to the Chief Administrative Officer of Michigan Medicine and maintains key relationships with the Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and CEO of Michigan Medicine; the Dean of the University of Michigan Medical School; the President of the U-M Health Regional Network as well as the University of Michigan Vice President for Information Technology and CIO.  The CDIO will collaborate closely with other C-level executives, institutes, and center directors, and Medical School department leaders, to implement transformative IT strategies for Michigan Medicine’s success.

 

 


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, healthcare administration, or related field required
  • Master’s or advanced degree preferred

Required Experiences

  • 15+ years of progressive IT leadership, including 7+ years in a senior executive role within a large, complex healthcare organization
  • Proven success leading Epic optimization or consolidation, large-scale IT integrations, and multi-entity organizational alignment
  • Demonstrated results in digital transformation, including data analytics, clinical workflow optimization, and patient-facing digital initiatives
  • Experience building or restructuring IT organizations and improving IT service delivery and reliability while managing costs and budgets effectively

Desired Experiences

  • Experience leading and mentoring large Information technology teams in an Academic Medical Center
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully navigate in a highly matrixed organization
  • Experience in a large, complex health system, owned by or strongly affiliated with a university
