Chief Technology Officer Position Overview

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) will oversee technology infrastructure at Lifespan, the largest healthcare provider in Rhode Island and the largest employer in the state.  

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President/Chief Information Officer, the CTO provides leadership to a team of approximately 130 staff. 

The CTO will deliver and support the information technology infrastructure assets and services needed to achieve Lifespan’s mission of delivering health with care.  

They will also align technology vision and architecture with business strategy by integrating business processes with appropriate forward-looking technologies, technology modernization, and cloud migration. 

The CTO leads the Information Services teams that maintain enterprise IT systems, including the system-wide implementation of the Epic electronic health record, at high standards of reliability, availability, and security needed for a large and complex academic healthcare system. 

They will support enterprise growth and operations with information technology and architecture plans that are flexible and scalable while introducing new technologies with demonstrated stability, such as the appropriate use of cloud technologies.  

The CTO will also continue to develop a cloud-smart migration strategy through SaaS, PaaS, and Iaas.


Qualifications

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer sciences or related field is required. 
  • A Master’s degree or PhD. is preferred. 

Experience:

  • Seven or more years of experience in progressively more responsible information services management roles in a diverse and operationally complex organization. 
  • Experience in managing complex technological infrastructures for a regional enterprise. 
  • Excellent knowledge of technology environments, including telecommunications, networks, media, desktops, mobile devices, data center technologies (Server and Storage), and cloud-based infrastructure services. 
  • Extensive knowledge of hardware platforms, enterprise software applications, and outsourced systems. 
  • Technical experience with systems networking, databases, and user support. 
  • Demonstrated ability to apply solutions to business problems.

VP / Chief Information Security Officer Position Highlights

Under the general direction of the Senior VP/CIO, the Chief Information Security Officer directs development, implementation, and oversight of Lifespan’s information technology security infrastructure in compliance with industry best practices and federal and state regulations. Responsibilities include developing information security strategy and implementation plans, as well as policies and procedures related to patient health information and all other confidential information in electronic form. The CISO provides leadership in development, management, control, and security assessment of all Lifespan systems include legacy applications, new applications, data centers, local area networks, wide area networks, firewall/proxy servers, telecommunications systems, service desk, technology centers and facility infrastructure.

Rady Children’s hospital is dedicated to innovation and research, and is affiliated and collaborates with the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The organization is a major pediatric clinical research center with over 500 ongoing clinical trials and research studies, and is also the region’s teaching hospital for the next generation of pediatric physicians.

Position Highlights

The CTO reports to the CIO and will be responsible for a Tech Services staff of 40+ professionals. The CTO will be responsible for strategic as well as day to day operations of the IT infrastructure in support of daily hospital and ambulatory operations. The CTO will also support IT infrastructure efforts for the Rady Pediatric Genomics and Systems Medicine Institute. In this capacity, the CTO will work with individuals in bleeding edge genomics. Peers of the CTO are 4 directors and a CMIO.
