UConn Health includes John Dempsey Hospital, School of Medicine’s faculty practice, as well as primary, specialty, and dental care facilities at the main campus in Farmington and across the state.  

UConn Health is also a thriving research enterprise and home to up to 40 start-up companies.  

UConn Health physicians and caregivers are leaders in their fields, including emerging areas of personalized medicine, and many have received national and international acclaim.  

Working to bolster the governor's vision to reinvent the Connecticut economy by harnessing the impressive research resources across the state, UConn Health's original research laboratories have been renovated and a new Technology Incubation Program facility has been constructed to include space for start-up bioscience and biotech businesses as part of a recent, nearly $1 billion "Bioscience Connecticut" investment in UConn Health.  

Among other things, Bioscience Connecticut has brought about new collaborations between the state, UConn, UConn Health, Yale University, and the prestigious Jackson Laboratory, and has enabled UConn Health to assume a position of global leadership in biomedical sciences. 


CIO (Associate Vice President) Position Overview

The University of Connecticut (“UConn”) Health Chief Information Officer role is a member of the senior management team. The CIO provides leadership and strategic direction for the planning and implementation of information systems and technology in support of the mission, while promoting UConn Health as a leader in the changing environments of research, medical education, and healthcare. 

The CIO provides day-to-day oversight and supervision over the information technology support units, including IT infrastructure, applications, network services, user services, telecommunications, IT security, and IT administration staff. This key executive is responsible for the management of business applications, including billing, laboratory, pharmacy, accounts payable, electronic medical record (EPIC), and other legacy systems.  

Through collaborative efforts, the CIO develops an information technology strategic plan (short and long-term) that will effectively support UConn Health’s business strategy and goals, and that is consistent with the IT strategy of the whole University.  

The CIO has direct-line reporting and accountability to the CEO of UConn Health (UConn’s Executive Vice President of Health Affairs), but also collaborates and liaises with the UConn CIO to promote university-wide IT alignment and coordination where possible.  

The CIO will provide technology oversight and develop short and long term strategic plans that include:  

  • John Dempsey Hospital  
  • UConn Medical Group (School of Medicine’s faculty practice) 
  • The School of Medicine and the School of Dental Medicine  
  • UConn Health’s research enterprise  
  • UConn Health administration and business services  

 The CIO will oversee a unionized IT department of over 200 technologists. 


Qualifications

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s degree required  
  • Master’s degree in computer science, business, or related field preferred  

Required Experience:  

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in information technology, preferably within healthcare  
  • 5+ years of IT leadership experience, preferably in an academic medical center environment
  • 3+ years experience working with CEOs and Boards at a senior level 
  •  Substantive experience with EPIC preferred 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current technologies, including:  

- IT infrastructure development and management 

- Computer operations/data center management 

- Applications development and support 

- Decision support 

- Telecommunication management
