Premier Health has retained Kirby Partners to support their search for a Chief Digital and Information Officer.

Premier Health is a private, nonprofit academic health system based in Dayton, Ohio. As one of the largest comprehensive health systems in Southwest Ohio, the system includes five inpatient campuses and a broad network of urgent care, emergency, specialty, behavioral health, and home health services. Premier Health’s flagship hospital, Miami Valley Hospital, is an academic medical center, one of the nation’s largest hospitals, and the Dayton region’s only adult level I trauma center.

Premier Health partners with Wright State University and its Boonshoft School of Medicine (BSOM) to educate and retain physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers in Dayton and surrounding areas. Together, the two institutions have enhanced the quality of patient care, developed and improved educational and clinical training, as well as research programs.

In recent years, they have taken significant strides to formalize and enhance their collaboration. This endeavor has led to the establishment of an affiliation agreement between the institutions, enabling them to prioritize collaboration on shared objectives and emerging initiatives.

Highlights of the 30-year agreement include:

  • Innovations and new initiatives in health care education: Investments from Premier Health – totaling $10 million in year one and $15 million in year two—will be invested to support an increase in the class size at the BSOM, as well as training and programs to grow the nursing workforce.
  • Shared board representation: Wright State University and Premier Health will appoint one member of their board leadership to serve as a nonvoting representative on the other’s governing board.
  • Collaborative operations: A Joint Operating Committee serves as the vehicle through which strategic partnership initiatives are developed and executed.

Wright State University’s BSOM serves as the academic sponsor of several residency and fellowship programs at Premier Health. In addition, Premier Health currently serves as the largest clinical site for Emergency Medicine residents in the region. As partners in innovation, Premier Health collaborates closely with Wright State University to unite the advanced biomedical research capabilities of Wright State University’s BSOM with the clinical resources of one of the largest hospital systems in Ohio.

The Wright State University and Premier Health Clinical Trials Research Alliance (CTRA) oversees clinical trials across Southwest Ohio, with groundbreaking clinical trials across a spectrum of medical disciplines including stroke, heart failure, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, migraine, and more. With the oversight of Wright State’s Institutional Review Board, Premier Health trials involving human subjects receive rigorous approval.

Designated as a University System of Ohio Center of Excellence, the Wright State University & Premier Health Neuroscience Institute leverages scientific research at the Wright State University BSOM and Premier Health’s extensive clinical resources to develop new, more effective treatments for neurologic conditions.

Premier Health hospitals have been recognized for their quality by U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, and others. Its facilities are accredited by The Joint Commission; American College of Emergency Physicians; American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer; and others.

In 2024, Premier Health invested $265.7 million in free care and other unpaid services to low-income families. The health system also invested $86.1 million in community projects and services.

Position Overview

Premier Health is seeking a visionary Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) to lead the organization into the digital age by driving clinical excellence, strategic innovation, and transformational change. This senior executive will be responsible for evolving Premier Health’s digital strategy to create new value through operational improvements, workforce optimization, and technology-enabled growth.

Key responsibilities:

  • Drive Clinical Excellence: Champion digital strategies that elevate clinical outcomes, improve care quality, and support evidence-based practices across the enterprise.
  • Strategic AI Implementation: Lead the deployment of artificial intelligence across clinical, operational, and administrative domains to enhance decision-making, streamline workflows, and unlock new capabilities.
  • Transform Business Models: Digitally reimagine existing business models by implementing disruptive technologies that improve efficiency, scalability, and patient-centered care.
  • Enhance Caregiver Experience: Improve caregiver satisfaction and operational efficiency through digital tools and workflow optimization—building the optimal workplace and workforce of the future.
  • Support Research & Population Health: Oversee the development of technology platforms that enable clinical trials, outcomes research, and population health initiatives, ensuring data-driven insights and scalable innovation.
  • Lead Digital Innovation: Serve as the senior-most leader of Premier Health’s digital innovation ecosystem, both internally and externally, with a consumer-first mindset.
  • Executive Accountability: Fulfill the responsibilities of Chief Digital Officer, Chief Information Officer, and Chief Technical Officer, ensuring alignment across all technology and innovation functions.
  • Build Cross-Functional Teams: Assemble and lead high-performing teams across operations, analytics, digital innovation, workflow design, clinical and business portfolios, infrastructure, and technology management.
  • Cybersecurity & Risk Oversight: Coordinate the cybersecurity program in partnership with Enterprise Risk Management and report to the Compliance and Audit Committee on technology risk and cybersecurity controls.
  • Ensure Operational Excellence: Guarantee that all technology solutions operate in a safe, secure, compliant, efficient, and high-quality manner.
  • Collaborate Across Functions: Work with product owners across technology, operations, and support functions to generate innovative digital solutions that drive growth and measurable outcomes.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (health care administration, business, industrial engineering, computer science management, and other engineering disciplines) required
  • Master’s degree (MBA) preferred

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of job-related experience
  • Experience in operations management, technology management as a COO, CIO, CTO, CMIO, Operations VP or Director, Technology VP or Director
  • Innovation, entrepreneurship, operations leadership, IT leadership, or digital leadership experience
  • Proven leadership of successful digital transformation initiatives and projects
  • Experience in managing and leading a digital team
  • Lean or Six Sigma experience
  • Digital experience and operations leadership is preferred
