About Charlotte & Winston-Salem, North Carolina

The CHIO may live anywhere between Charlotte and Winston-Salem. The two cities are about 80 miles apart, giving candidates a broad range of communities and living options across Central North Carolina.

Charlotte is North Carolina’s largest city and offers the amenities of a major metro area, including professional sports, arts and entertainment, dining, shopping and a wide range of neighborhoods. Charlotte Douglas International Airport also provides strong domestic and international air access.

Winston-Salem, with approximately 257,000 residents, offers a smaller-city feel with a strong cultural, academic and healthcare presence. The communities between the two cities offer additional options for those looking for more space, a suburban setting or a smaller-town environment while staying within reach of both metro areas.

Central North Carolina offers easy access to a wide range of outdoor recreation and weekend destinations. The Blue Ridge Mountains, including Boone, Blowing Rock and Asheville, are within a few hours’ drive and offer hiking, scenic drives, mountain towns and year-round activities.

The region also has a strong network of lakes, parks and trails for hiking, boating and other outdoor recreation.

For longer weekends, the North Carolina coast is within driving distance, including Wilmington and the Brunswick Islands. South Carolina beaches, including Myrtle Beach, are also accessible.
