Position Overview
The Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) plays a crucial role in shaping and leading the organization’s information services and technology strategy. The CIO provides vision and leadership for the strategic development and management of information, information resources, and technology to support achieving the organization’s strategic goals. The CIO ensures that technology supports clinical excellence, operational efficiency, business transformation, and enables Brown University Health’s strategic vision and plan.
As a key member of the senior management team and as an advisor on information management issues to senior leadership, the CIO will use their extensive leadership and technical expertise, focusing on developing and implementing technology strategies that enable and enhance business plans and create competitive advantages for the organization.
Upcoming projects for which the CIO will provide leadership and oversight include: the implementation of Workday and Epic Beaker as well as the implementation of Epic at affiliated physician practices and a new hospital acquisition in Massachusetts.
Enterprise IT Strategy
- Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive, long-term information management strategy and operational plans to support the achievement of the organization’s strategic goals across the mission pillars of clinical care, research, and education.
- Deliver technology applications and hardware that are optimized to the Brown University Health user. Lead by example to nurture a culture of innovation across Brown University Health by evaluating emerging technologies and their ability to advance Brown University Health’s goals. Ensure successful adoption of innovative technologies through user-focused operations.
- Partner with the Chief Strategy Officer in the development of Brown Health’s digital roadmap.
- Establish Information Management Key Performance Indicators (KPI) in business and clinical terms to measure success, compare against industry average, and best achievable practice.
- Ensure that all legal and regulatory requirements related to information management and medical record administration are met. Establish and oversee enterprise-wide technology policies, standards, and guidelines to prevent unauthorized use, release, modification, or destruction of data. Ensure that these policies support the organization’s data protection and security objectives.
- Focus on achieving near-term goals such as automating core processes with Machine Learning, leveraging Artificial Intelligence, and utilizing advanced technologies to enhance data analytics for organization-wide decision-making. Simultaneously establish long-term conditions for success to ensure the organization remains competitive in a digital landscape.
- Partner with stakeholders to enrich and then scale digital transformation initiatives, ensuring technology enhances patient care, provider efficiency, and customer experience; and Brown University Health’s reputation as a value-adding partner is upheld and advanced.
Leadership & Governance
- Serve as an advisor to the organization on issues related to information management, identifying trends and issues, and proposing action to be taken. Collaborate with organizational leaders to develop and implement technology solutions that ensure seamless patient care. Manage technology integration across the health system and create digital platforms to enhance patient care. Partner with clinical stakeholders to ensure that the technology strategy is integrated with clinical and business strategies.
- Demonstrate the ability to deliver technology solutions that address complex strategic, clinical, and business challenges as evidenced through meeting and exceeding predetermined service level agreements between and among research, clinical and business operations. Effectively promote and communicate the purpose of system-wide integration needed to meet the evolving demands of today’s dynamic healthcare environment. Provide administrative direction to the Information Security Oversight Committee.
- Lead change management efforts to drive adoption of innovative technologies and workflows.
IT Infrastructure, Security & Operations
- Co-chairs the IS Steering Committee with the Chief Physician officer, VP of Research, and the Chief of Hospital Operations; leading the prioritization and change efforts for technology programs across the organization.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define and implement progressive infrastructure and hardware solutions.
- Ensure a highly reliable, secure, and scalable IT infrastructure, supporting Brown University Health’s digital operations.
- Oversee EHR (Epic) and clinical IT systems, ensuring seamless integration and interoperability.
- Maintain cybersecurity resilience, ensuring compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to implement customer- and team-facing digital user experiences, such as mobile apps and online portals, to enhance patient engagement and service delivery.
Talent, Culture & Financial Oversight
- Build and develop a high-performance information management team. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and excellence. Lead, manage, and mentor IT professionals to achieve the objectives outlined in the strategic plan, focusing on improving technology competencies and overall efficiency. Earn influence with stakeholders through exceptional service and support.
- Plan and communicate needs and value for IT capital investments and operational budget. Work collaboratively with executive colleagues. Oversee IT budgets, vendor management, and multi-year capital planning, ensuring cost-effective technology solutions and valuable technology service delivery.
- Promote industry best practices, benchmarking Brown University Health against leading health systems and industries.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in information systems, business administration, healthcare administration, or related field preferred.
Experience:
- 10+ years of progressive leadership in IT, analytics, or digital transformation.
Strategic & Transformational Leadership:
- Proven experience in leading large-scale IT initiatives in a complex, multi-site business.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills evidenced by demonstrated ability to foster a team culture of listening and collaboration, transparency, and superior service as well as an ability to overcome obstacles and drive large-scale organizational transformation by utilizing change management principles.
- Strong strategic and business mindset.
- Demonstrated organizational, financial analysis, staff development and planning skills and understanding of applicable law in the health care IT environment.
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to ensure message is received and understood by the customer.
- Experience with Workday a plus
