Valley Health is a not-for-profit health system based in Winchester, Virginia, serving the Northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and the Eastern Panhandle and Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. The Valley Health network includes six hospitals, more than 75 medical practices and urgent care centers, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, medical transport, long-term care, and home health.

Position Overview

The Enterprise Architect guides Valley Health’s clinical, business, and IT leaders through transformation and optimization initiatives, aligning business and IT strategies and developing the organization’s enterprise architecture.

Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, this role builds relationships with key stakeholders, facilitates alignment across decentralized IT environments, and helps achieve targeted outcomes related to revenue growth, cost optimization, risk mitigation, and sustainability. The Enterprise Architect leads the evolution of the EA practice within The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF).

 

Key Responsibilities

Core Functions

  • Align business, clinical, and IT stakeholders across a decentralized landscape

  • Build trusted relationships with business and IT leaders

  • Adapt to changing business and operating models

  • Analyze trends and disruptions for strategic impact

  • Visualize future-state models to support long-term planning

  • Support project-centric and product-centric delivery models

  • Communicate the value of enterprise architecture

  • Drive the EA function and build architectural thinking by guiding and mentoring Solutions Architects and Domain Architects using TOGAF

Enterprise Architecture Strategy and Governance

  • Integrate business, informatics, and IT functions within the enterprise architecture model

  • Analyze business capabilities and IT environments to identify gaps and recommend solutions

  • Partner with the CIO, CMIO, and IT leaders to design and mature the EA operating model

  • Shape enterprise technology strategy using business, market, and trend analysis

  • Build current- and future-state architecture models using TOGAF and ITIL methodologies

  • Ensure EA alignment with compliance, regulatory, and patient safety requirements

  • Build and lead a Community of Practice for Solutions Architects and Domain Architects

  • Represent EA within portfolio governance and align with the Strategic PMO

  • Advise stakeholders on product decisions and technology-enabled transformation

  • Develop and apply minimal viable architectures, standards, and reference patterns using TOGAF/ITIL

  • Collaborate with delivery teams to align solutions with enterprise architecture

  • Partner with infrastructure teams to ensure consistency and guide needed changes

  • Assess organizational readiness and define the cultural, structural, and resource shifts needed to support enterprise architecture

  • Map relationships among people, processes, information, technology, and the external environment to inform operating model design

Innovation and Portfolio Modernization

  • Identify and assess disruptive forces, emerging technologies, and innovation opportunities

  • Applies TPESTRE (technological, political, economic, social/cultural, trust/ethics, regulatory/legal, environmental) trends to guide strategic decisions

  • Pilot innovative solutions and integrate successful projects into operations
  • Align architecture activities across programs, projects, and portfolios; develop implementation plans and IT investment roadmaps

  • Detect critical IT deficiencies and recommend targeted improvements

  • Evaluate the healthcare landscape, financial drivers, and market forces using scenario planning to guide strategic investments

Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or related field required

  • TOGAF certification required

  • Master’s degree in a related field preferred

Required Experience & Competencies

  • 10+ years of progressive IT leadership experience, including enterprise or solution architecture

  • Experience aligning business, clinical, and IT strategies in a healthcare setting

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare operations, regulatory requirements, and enterprise IT environments

  • Proven ability to build and influence cross-functional stakeholder relationships

  • Skilled in mentoring and developing architecture talent

  • Strong analytical, communication, and change leadership skills

Preferred Experience & Competencies

  • Experience leading or developing an enterprise architecture practice

  • Experience working within project-centric and product-centric operating models
